PERCEPTION AND RISK MANAGEMENT: Effects of Impairment on Decision Making skills

Effects of Impairment on Decision Making Skills | Perception and Risk Management

1. Impaired judgment

Several sources, including illnesses, alcohol, and medication, can cause impaired judgment.

Impaired judgment is dangerous as it hampers the ability to make accurate and correct decisions. It will cause the driver to act irrationally and take more risks than usual.

Drivers may not realize this, which may cause them to get behind the wheel of a vehicle even if they are impaired.

2. Lack of attention/alertness

The driver is likelier to be less alert and attentive when impaired. Lack of attention or alertness may cause the driver to drift away from their lane or not notice a pedestrian crossing the unsafe road.

Several sources can cause this, including alcohol, drugs, stress, fatigue, drowsiness, and medication.

Other effects include;

  • Blurry vision
  • Sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Fainting
  • Nausea
  • Numbness
  • Loss of muscle control
  • Slow reaction times
  • Inability to remain in their lane
  • Short-term memory loss
  • Loss of concentration
