Vehicle emissions must be controlled and regulated to ensure they are not crossing a dangerous level.

However, effective 1st April 2019, drivers in Ontario do not need to get 'Drive clean emissions tests' for any light vehicles.

That does not mean the emissions test does not apply. All new light vehicles get tested before registration, and on-road law enforcement enforces this.

Besides, the following have to get the tests done:

• Heavy diesel commercial vehicles (4500kg)
• At least 7-year-old vehicles
• Vehicles older than the current model year
• When there is a change in owners
