How to Responsibly Arrive at the Scene of a Collision

RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY: Arriving at the Scene of a Collision

Arriving at the Scene of a Collision - Respect and Responsibility

Call 911

What to Do If You Witness an Accident but Are Not Involved

Stop in a Safe Location

  • If you witness an accident, first ensure that you stop your vehicle in a safe location, away from the traffic path and potential hazards. This will prevent further incidents and allow you to assist effectively.

Call 911

  • Immediately call 911 to report the accident. Provide the dispatcher with accurate information about the location, the number of vehicles involved, and any apparent injuries. This ensures that emergency services can respond promptly and adequately.

Help Direct Traffic Away from the Accident

  • If it is safe, help direct traffic away from the accident scene. This can prevent additional collisions and allow emergency responders to access the area more easily. Use hazard lights, reflective vests, or emergency triangles to signal other drivers if available.

Provide Medical Assistance as First-Aid

  • If you are trained in first aid and it is safe to approach, offer medical assistance to those injured. Check for breathing, bleeding, and consciousness, and provide basic first aid until professional help arrives. Remember, your safety comes first, so do not put yourself at risk.

Offer Your Contact Details as a Witness

  • Approach the drivers involved in the accident and offer your contact details. Let them know you are willing to serve as a witness for insurance claims. Your testimony can be crucial in determining the sequence of events and liability.

Provide Information to the Police

  • When the police arrive, please give them a detailed account of what you witnessed. Include information such as the time of the accident, the direction the vehicles were travelling, and any relevant observations about the drivers' behaviour or road conditions. Give the police your contact information if they need further statements or clarification.

Stay at the Scene

  • If possible, stay at the scene until emergency services and the police have everything under control. Your presence can be valuable in case they need additional information or assistance.

By following these steps, you can play a vital role in ensuring that help is provided quickly and accurate information is available for the authorities and those involved in the accident. Your actions can make a significant difference in the outcome of the situation.
