Right-of-Way Manoeuvres: Enhance Your Driving Safety
It is essential to communicate with other drivers at all times and be aware of your surroundings for several reasons:
Safety: Communicating with other drivers and being aware of your surroundings can help avoid accidents and potential hazards. For example, suppose you see a car swerving on the road or driving erratically. In that case, you can take evasive action to avoid a collision. Similarly, if you are changing lanes or turning, signalling your intentions can help other drivers anticipate your actions and avoid a collision.
Traffic flow: Good communication with other drivers can help keep traffic flowing smoothly. For example, suppose you are approaching a busy intersection and signal your intention to turn. In that case, other drivers can adjust their speed and position to allow you to make your turn safely and efficiently.
Courtesy: Good communication with other drivers can help promote a sense of courtesy and respect on the road. By using your turn signals, letting other drivers merge or change lanes, and avoiding aggressive driving behaviour, you can help create a more positive and safe driving environment for everyone.
Effective communication and awareness of your surroundings are critical for safe and responsible driving. Being alert and attentive on the road can help prevent accidents, promote traffic flow, and show consideration for all road users.
The vast majority of accidents happen when changing direction. Therefore, it is essential to remember to follow safety rules when approaching different turns. This section will teach you just that.
Uncontrolled intersection
There are no devices to manage traffic; as a general rule, remember to yield to cars that reach the intersection first.
Always yield to whichever vehicle is on the right-hand side when in doubt.
Controlled intersections
If there are traffic lights, follow them.
If there are stop or yield signs, stop at the line before the intersection, give way to all road users (including pedestrians), and check and continue.
T- Intersections
T-intersections are where one road ends through another street. If approaching the road ending at the intersection, the driver must give way to traffic going from the left to the right and vice versa.
Note: The Driver must yield to emergency vehicles, no matter what.
Left turns
Drivers should always yield to other road users when making a left turn. Only turn when it is clear and safe to do so. Be sure to follow the rules of checking mirrors, giving signals and checking blind spots. The driver must follow the lane rules at all times. If in the left lane, a driver must enter the immediate left lane, and later, the driver can do a mirror, signal and blind spot check and merge into the right lane.
