Understanding Expectations of Other Road Users in Perception and Risk Management

Driviology Road Safety Education Team

What this actually means for you

Your hands and feet learn the car in a few weeks. Learning to read the road takes longer, and it starts with understanding what is on this page. Failure to communicate can easily lead to accidents, which means there is less predictability on the road. Build it early and it becomes automatic — your eyes go to the right places before your brain has even finished noticing why.

Expectations of Other Road Users | Perception and Risk Management

Hand Signals While Driving

Communication

road-users expect other road-users to communicate all manoeuvres before they make it.

Failure to communicate can easily lead to accidents, which means there is less predictability on the road. Drivers can communicate using turn signals, hand signals, horns, and other communication features.

Attention

Drivers expect other road-users to be attentive on the road.

Attention means being aware of other vehicles' positions and keeping an eye out not to rear-end them.

Vehicle position

Drivers expect vehicles to be in the correct position at the right moment.

For example, drivers would not expect them to turn right from the far left lane.

Ensure their vehicle is in the correct position relative to their intended manoeuvre.

Speed Limit Sign

Speed

Drivers expect other road-users to maintain the appropriate speeds at all times.

Failure to maintain the correct speed can easily result in unpredictability.

Using this on Ontario roads — and on your road test

Space is the physical form of this skill. A driver who keeps a proper following distance and an escape route almost never has to make a dramatic decision, because surprises arrive with time attached. On wet or icy Ontario roads that margin needs to grow, not shrink — stopping distances stretch and other drivers make mistakes you cannot predict. Build the habit of asking, every few seconds: what could go wrong here, and where would I go? That quiet question, asked constantly, is what experienced drivers are actually doing behind their calm.

Questions drivers ask us

Can you explain expectations of other road users in perception and risk management in simple terms?

Drivers can communicate using turn signals, hand signals, horns, and other communication features.

What should new drivers know about communication?

road-users expect other road-users to communicate all manoeuvres before they make it.

How do examiners test this on a road test?

They watch your eyes and your timing: mirror and shoulder checks, how early you react to hazards, and whether your speed and following distance leave you room. You will not be asked theory questions — your driving is the answer.
