How to Use a Car's Brake Pedal Correctly
Last reviewed: 2026 · Driviology Road Safety Education Team
Quick Answer
Keep your right foot ready near the brake pedal in traffic, pressing down progressively and smoothly for normal stops, and firmly and immediately for an emergency stop.
The brake pedal is the single most important control in the car, and how you use it affects your stopping distance, comfort, and the safety of the traffic behind you.
Foot Position
Keep your heel on the floor and pivot your foot from the accelerator to the brake using your ankle, rather than lifting your whole leg, which is both faster and gives finer pressure control.
Everyday vs. Emergency Braking
For everyday stops, brake gradually as described in our guide to braking gradually. In an emergency, press the pedal firmly and hold it down, trusting your vehicle’s ABS to prevent wheel lock-up.
Common Mistakes
- Resting a foot on the brake unnecessarily (riding the brakes)
- Braking too late because of tailgating or inattention
- Pumping the brakes on a vehicle equipped with ABS, which is unnecessary and less effective
