When and Why to Dip Your Headlights for Oncoming Traffic

Quick Answer
Dip your headlights from high beams to low beams whenever an oncoming vehicle approaches or when following closely behind another vehicle, to avoid blinding the driver in front of or facing you.
High beams greatly improve visibility on a dark road, but they can just as easily blind another driver if not switched off at the right moment.
When to Dip Your Lights
Switch to low beams as soon as you see an oncoming vehicle’s headlights, and also when following closely behind another car, since high beams reflect off their mirrors directly into their eyes.
Why Timing Matters
Dipping your lights too late still momentarily blinds the other driver. Switch as soon as you notice the oncoming vehicle, well before it is directly in front of you.
If You Are Blinded by Someone Else’s Lights
Look slightly toward the right edge of your own lane rather than directly at oncoming high beams, and slow down if visibility is significantly reduced.
