Kitchener routes heavily feature the Highway 7/8 Expressway, which has notoriously short, curved on-ramps and extremely aggressive commuter traffic.
The environment requires rapid decision-making. You will transition from complex, multi-lane city streets to high-speed expressways with very little warning.
Expect a challenging mix of heavy transit corridors, active pedestrian crossovers near the commercial centers, and fast-paced regional highway driving.
Failing the Expressway Merge. The ramps on Highway 7/8 are incredibly short and curved. Students fail to accelerate hard enough to merge safely into the 90 km/h traffic.
Failing to yield at pedestrian crossovers. Kitchener utilizes many mid-block pedestrian crossovers with flashing lights that students frequently roll through.
Lane change hesitation. Driving on Ottawa St or Victoria St requires decisive lane changes; waiting too long for the 'perfect' gap causes traffic flow disruptions.
On the Highway 7/8 merge, you must treat the gas pedal aggressively. The moment you clear the curve, push hard to reach 90 km/h before the short merge lane disappears.
Watch for the 'Shark Tooth' yield lines painted on the road at pedestrian crossovers. You must stop fully *behind* those lines if a pedestrian is waiting.
If you miss a lane change because traffic is too heavy, simply state: 'It is not safe to move.' The examiner will gladly reroute you rather than see you force a dangerous merge.
The G test here relies on the Expressway (90 km/h) rather than the 401 (100 km/h). Do not accidentally speed up to 100 km/h during the highway component.
