Pickle Lake is the 'End of the Paved Road' in Ontario. You will navigate severe winter conditions, unpaved gravel surfaces, and heavy northern supply trucks.
The environment completely lacks standard municipal infrastructure. You must handle severe traction loss, unpaved shoulders, and a complete lack of road markings.
Expect a test heavily focused on winter/off-road driving survival skills, extremely low-speed maneuvers, and safe interaction with heavy freight transport.
Losing traction. Accelerating too hard or braking too abruptly on gravel, mud, or snow-packed roads, causing the vehicle to slide.
Straddling the road. Failing to stay on the right-hand side of unlined dirt/gravel roads when encountering oncoming local traffic or supply trucks.
Failing to scan for pedestrians/ATVs. The lack of standard sidewalks means pedestrians, snowmobiles, and ATVs frequently share the roadway.
Treat the accelerator and brake pedals like they are made of glass. Smooth, gradual inputs are the only way to maintain traction on unpaved surfaces.
Always hug the right side of the road, even if there are no lines and the center of the road looks smoother.
Give massive supply trucks the right-of-way. If a heavy truck is approaching on a narrow, unpaved road, pull as far to the right as safely possible and stop.
TRAVEL POINT: An extreme, deeply isolated testing location. Standard G-Test highway merging requirements do not apply here due to the lack of high-speed multi-lane highways.
