Red Lake is an extreme Northwestern mining town. The routes feature Highway 105, severe winter weather damage, and massive mining transport trucks.
Testing in the deep North means managing your vehicle on rougher terrain while dealing with roads that often lack clear, freshly painted lane dividers.
You will face a blend of high-speed regional highway traffic and residential streets that require masterful hazard identification without modern road markings.
Swerving to avoid potholes or rough pavement. Students instinctively jerk the steering wheel, inadvertently crossing into oncoming lanes or failing to check blind spots.
Straddling lanes on unmarked roads. Winter weather often erodes the painted lines; students fail by drifting into the center of the road rather than hugging the right side.
Following heavy transport trucks too closely. Failing to leave a mandatory 3-second space cushion behind mining trucks on the major arterial roads.
Do not swerve out of your lane to avoid a pothole. Slow down and drive straight through it safely. Leaving your lane without signaling is an instant fail.
If the painted lines are faded or missing entirely, always imagine a solid yellow line down the middle of the street. Hug the right side of your imaginary lane tightly.
Give mining trucks a massive buffer. If you can't see the truck driver's mirrors, they cannot see you. Never hover in their blind spot.
TRAVEL POINT: Operates part-time. Excellent pass rates, but examiners will fail you instantly for a lack of basic vehicle control on rough or snow-covered roads.
