Instruments and Warning Indicators (Part 1) - Understanding Your Vehicle's Alerts

What this actually means for you
Students often treat this as the boring chapter. Then a warning light comes on during a lesson, and suddenly it is the most relevant chapter in the book. This page covers vehicle's alerts — what it involves, why it matters, and how it shows up in everyday driving. Examiners notice this too — a driver who checks the car before moving off looks like a driver who takes the whole thing seriously.
Instruments and Warning Indicators Explained - Vehicle Safety Tips
The instruments and warning indicators communicate the following pieces of information:
- Speedometer: Shows current Speed and mileage in MPH and KPH.
- Tachometer: Shows the number of rotations per minute the engine is making.
- Odometer: Shows distance in miles or kilometres a car has travelled in its lifetime.
- Fuel Gauge: Indicates how much fuel remains in the vehicle's fuel tank.
- Gear Display: Shows which gear the car is currently in.
- Turn Signal Indicators: Indicates a flashing light when turn signals are on.
- Hazard Lights: This shows when emergency lights are on.
- Active System Lights: Active system lights display indicator lights that warn about the open door, open truck, battery level, tire pressure, and other information depending on the vehicle. Please review the vehicle's owner's manual for additional information.
This section discusses warning indicators on the vehicle's dashboard and what they mean.

Using this on Ontario roads — and on your road test
You do not need a mechanic's knowledge — you need an owner's routine. Fluids, tires, lights, belts, and warning indicators each tell a story, and catching a small problem in a Newmarket driveway is always cheaper and safer than meeting it on Highway 400. Winter raises the stakes in Ontario: batteries weaken in the cold, washer fluid runs out exactly when the roads are dirtiest, and tire condition decides how much grip you actually have. Work this chapter into a monthly routine and the car will rarely surprise you.
Questions drivers ask us
Can you explain vehicle's alerts in simple terms?
Discover the various instruments and warning indicators in your vehicle. Understand their functions, including speedometers, tachometers, and warning lights for a safer driving experience.
How often should I check these things?
A quick walk-around before trips, and a proper look about once a month — tires, fluids, lights, and anything that looks, sounds, or feels different from last time. Catching a small problem early is almost always cheaper and safer than meeting it on the highway.
Will the examiner check my car before the road test?
Yes. Before the test, the examiner confirms the vehicle is roadworthy — things like signals, brake lights, horn, and tires. If the car is not safe or legal to drive, the test may not go ahead, so check these before test day, not in the parking lot.
