Driving Tips for Beginners
Everything a first-time driver needs to know before getting behind the wheel in Ontario, from mirror checks to road signs.
Check Your Mirrors First
Mirrors are your eyes for what is behind you. Set your centre mirror so you can see out the rear window clearly. Adjust both side mirrors until you can just see the edge of your car. Check all three mirrors every few seconds while you drive.
Control Your Speed
Speed limits exist to keep everyone safe. In Ontario, the default speed in cities is 50 km/h. On rural roads, it is 80 km/h. Always slow down near schools, playgrounds, and road works. Going too fast reduces your time to react and stop safely.
Keep a Safe Following Distance
Never follow too closely. Leave at least a 2-second gap between you and the car ahead. In rain or snow, extend that to 4 seconds or more. This space gives you time to brake safely if the car in front stops without warning.
Signal Before You Move
Always use your turn signal before you turn or change lanes. Signal at least 3 seconds in advance. Check your mirrors, then check your blind spot by looking over your shoulder. Only move once it is safe. Other drivers need time to react to your signal.
Stay Focused on the Road
Distractions cause serious accidents. Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal in Ontario. Put your phone away before you start the engine. Keep both hands on the wheel. If you need to check something, pull over safely before you do.
