A Guide to Defensive Driving

Learn how to anticipate hazards, manage risk, and make smarter decisions behind the wheel.

The Defensive Driving Mindset

Defensive driving means staying safe even when others make mistakes. You think ahead and plan for hazards before they happen. You leave yourself time and space to react. It is an active skill that reduces your chances of being in an accident, regardless of how other drivers behave.

Scan the Road Ahead

Look 10 to 15 seconds ahead of your vehicle. This gives you time to spot trouble early. Scan both sides of the road, not just the car in front. Check your mirrors every 5 to 8 seconds. Staying aware of all traffic around you is the first step to avoiding danger.

Maintain Space on All Sides

Keep a cushion of space around your vehicle at all times. Stay at least 2 seconds behind the car ahead, and more in bad weather. Avoid driving beside large trucks for long periods. When someone tailgates you, ease off the gas to create more space ahead of you.

Adjust to Changing Conditions

Road conditions change constantly, and your driving must match them. Slow down in rain, ice, and fog. Reduce your speed through sharp bends and construction zones. Drive with extra care at night. Never assume the road will stay the same as when you started your trip.

Stay Calm and Patient

Aggressive drivers put everyone at risk. If someone cuts you off, do not respond with anger. Give them space and stay calm. Honking and tailgating in return only makes the situation more dangerous. Your goal is to arrive safely, not to win an argument on the road.
