Road Safety Best Practices

The habits and techniques that keep you and everyone around you safe on Ontario roads.

Wear Your Seatbelt Every Time

Seatbelts save lives. In Ontario, every person in the vehicle must wear one. Buckle up before you start the engine. Make sure all passengers are secured too. Children must be in a properly fitted car seat or booster until they meet the size requirements for a seatbelt.

Never Drive Distracted

Distracted driving is one of the top causes of road accidents. Keep your phone face down and out of reach. Set your GPS before you leave. Ask a passenger to help if you need directions. Focus on the road from the moment you pull away.

Adjust for Weather Conditions

Ontario weather can change fast. Slow down in rain, snow, and fog. Turn on your headlights when visibility drops. Increase your following distance on wet or icy roads. Never rush in bad conditions. It is better to arrive late than not at all.

Respect Every Road User

Roads are shared spaces. Give cyclists at least one metre of space when you pass. Slow down near pedestrian crossings and yield to those crossing. Watch carefully in school zones and near bus stops. Be patient around large trucks, as they need more time to stop and turn.

Never Drive Impaired

Alcohol and drugs affect your judgement, vision, and reaction time. Even small amounts can impair your ability to drive safely. If you have been drinking, call a cab, use a ride-share app, or arrange a sober driver in advance. It is never worth the risk to yourself or others.
