Detailed DriveTest Tips — What the Examiner Looks For
Understanding exactly how road tests are evaluated gives you a significant advantage. Here is a detailed breakdown of common evaluation points and how to handle them confidently.
Stop Signs
Come to a complete, full stop — wheels must stop rolling. Stop before the line, not on it.
Traffic Lights
Begin slowing well before a yellow light. Do not accelerate through amber signals.
Shoulder Checks
Check your blind spot (shoulder check) before every lane change, merge, and turn. Examiners watch for this explicitly.
Mirror Checks
Use all three mirrors regularly — centre, left, and right. Examiners check eye movement.
Speed Management
Stay within the posted limit. Driving significantly below the limit can also be marked as a fault.
Following Distance
Maintain at least a 2–3 second following distance in normal conditions; increase in bad weather.
Lane Position
Stay centred in your lane. Drifting toward the edge or centre line is marked negatively.
Three-Point Turn
Check mirrors and blind spots before starting. Execute smoothly without mounting the curb.
Parallel Parking
Park within 30 cm of the curb. Use mirrors and move slowly and deliberately.
Intersection Approach
Approach controlled and uncontrolled intersections with appropriate caution and correct positioning.
