Immediate Safety Steps
- Stop the vehicle and check yourself and passengers for injuries.
- If the vehicle is drivable and no one is seriously hurt, move it out of traffic to avoid a second collision.
- Turn on hazard lights and set up warning triangles or flares if you have them.
Exchanging Information and Documenting the Scene
Exchange name, contact information, licence plate number, and insurance details with the other driver(s). Take photos of vehicle positions, damage, and road conditions, and note the time, location, and weather.
When You Must Report to Police
In Ontario, a collision must generally be reported to police if there is an injury, or if the total damage appears to exceed the province’s reporting threshold.
