Explore Comfort Devices for Enhanced Driving Experience

Driviology Road Safety Education Team

What this actually means for you

You do not need to be a mechanic to drive well, but you do need to know what the car is telling you and what to check before you trust it. Comfort devices are another area where we see innovations. Examiners notice this too — a driver who checks the car before moving off looks like a driver who takes the whole thing seriously.

Comfort Devices: Innovations for a Better Driving Experience

Comfort devices are another area where we see innovations. Setting up these comfort devices while driving can cause a distraction; please use them safely. Following is the list of comfort devices:

  • Temperature Control Device (Heating and Cooling)
  • Seat Position and Angles
  • Steering Wheel Adjustments
  • Side-view Mirrors
  • Power Window
  • Door Lock
  • Cruise Control
  • Car Navigation
  • Electric Sunroof
  • Turn Signal Lever
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Radio
  • USB
  • Bluetooth
  • WIFI
  • Sound Settings
  • And others

These devices intend to keep the driver comfortable on the road. However, it is essential to remember that they should only be changed when the vehicle is at a complete stop.

It would be best not to allow these privileges to distract the driver from concentrating on the road.

Temperature Control Device

Temperature Control Device

Usually found in the centre console, it is used to control the climate within the vehicle.

Seat Position Angles

Seat Position and Angles

Usually found underneath and to the side of the seats, use these to adjust the position.

The driver must not sit too close to the steering as in an accident; the airbag explosion will cause injuries if the driver is too close.

Steering Wheel Adjustments

Steering Wheel Adjustments

Usually found underneath the steering wheel, use this to adjust the steering wheel column's height and angle. Ensure that the peak of the steering wheel is not higher than the shoulders.

Side-view Mirrors

Side-view Mirrors

Used to see vehicles behind and adjust these before driving to ensure cars behind are visible. Also, be sure to watch out for the blind spots.

Power Window

Power Window

Automatic windows that roll up and down at the click of a button.

Door Lock

Door Lock

They lock the doors, usually found near the entrance handles.

Cruise Control

Cruise Control

Cruise Control maintains a constant speed near the steering wheel, usually on the highway.

Car Navigation

Car Navigation

Car Navigation System uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) to navigate.

Electric Sunroof

Electric Sunroof

Electric Sunroof is slidable to open a gap in the roof for better air circulation.

Turn Signal Lever

Turn Signal Lever

Found on stocks on either side of the steering wheel, they indicate the turning direction.

Windshield Wipers

Windshield Wipers

The windshield wipers are on the steering wheel's right side. They are used during rainy conditions to clear water from the windshields.

Car Radio

Radio, USB, Bluetooth, WIFI, Sound Settings, And others

All of these support various leisure activities. Be sure to use them only when stopped or clear from other vehicles, as they may cause distractions while driving.

Using this on Ontario roads — and on your road test

You do not need a mechanic's knowledge — you need an owner's routine. Fluids, tires, lights, belts, and warning indicators each tell a story, and catching a small problem in a Newmarket driveway is always cheaper and safer than meeting it on Highway 400. Winter raises the stakes in Ontario: batteries weaken in the cold, washer fluid runs out exactly when the roads are dirtiest, and tire condition decides how much grip you actually have. Work this chapter into a monthly routine and the car will rarely surprise you.

Questions drivers ask us

Can you explain comfort devices for enhanced driving experience in simple terms?

Setting up these comfort devices while driving can cause a distraction; please use them safely.

What should new drivers know about temperature control device?

Usually found in the centre console, it is used to control the climate within the vehicle.

Will the examiner check my car before the road test?

Yes. Before the test, the examiner confirms the vehicle is roadworthy — things like signals, brake lights, horn, and tires. If the car is not safe or legal to drive, the test may not go ahead, so check these before test day, not in the parking lot.

What should new drivers know about seat position and angles?

Usually found underneath and to the side of the seats, use these to adjust the position.
